Offering an outrageous and seemingly random fusion of Japanese and Jewish cuisine, South Williamsburg newcomer, Shalom Japan, quite simply, works. Don’t let the cutesy name and strange menu deter you; the restaurant is small and simple, the ambiance pleasant, and the food is outstanding. The menu is seasonally focused and changes daily, but items such as the Matzo Ball Ramen, The ‘Jew Egg’, a hardboiled egg wrapped in falafel rather than sausage , and the Lox Bowl, fresh lox over Japanese sticky rice, make regular appearances. For dessert, the Cornbread Challah with caramel popcorn on the side is perfection. A Jewish mother and her two daughters seated next to me continued to order food even after they had finished their meal – including dessert – and they could not believe how similar the matzo balls tasted to their grandmother’s recipe!
