I have never been to Haiti although it is a country I have wanted to visit since a very close friendship, forged at Columbia University, introduced me to it. Haiti was a continuing source of study in my anthropology courses; it was an aesthetic source of inspiration during my years with Aid to Artisans. It has been a point of conscience always, a reminder that just beyond our border a people with great heart, great talent, endurance and, indeed, the capacity to prevail, meet life head on. I have rarely encountered a people and a country who have stolen the hearts of others the way Haitians do. The love they inspire will, I hope, find its incarnation in an ongoing effort to answer both their physical and psychic needs.
