The king of Moroccan lanterns has a wonderful multi-story gallery in Passage Ghandouri – an artists’ enclave in Gueliz, Marrakech’s new city. The architecturally spare space sets off the array of finely incised and cut brass lanterns that Yahya has perfected. Like lace, they are gorgeous as works of art and, when lit, scatter upon the wall or ceiling flecks of gold. So beautiful.
I stumbled upon Moor on Rue des Anciens Marrakchis just beyond Braconnier’s shop and was impressed particularly by the clothing design. Keeping an air of the caftan and the Moroccan embroidery for which it is well known, they have nevertheless reinterpreted the design into good looking coats and jackets (Scotland meets Morocco) in unusual fabrics and narrowly cut. There is jewelry as well here, good handbags – an array of antique objects too – that make the shopping experience just a little bit different. Hallelulja!
